During the Great Depression the focus in American ceramics shifted
from the vessel to ceramic sculpture. Under the leadership of Guy
Cowan of Cleveland's Cowan Pottery, a group of ceramic artists,
including Waylande Gregory, Viktor Schreckengost, Russell Aitken,
Thelma Frazier and Edris Eckhardt, bought national attention to
ceramic sculpture as a viable new medium. Waylande Gregory
shifted this sculptural medium further, creating monumental public
works, meant to be seen outdoors, rather than a an indoor vitrine,
which had largely been the norm until then. This lecture will discuss
the shifting values for this group of sculptors.

Tom Folk is an art historian and appraiser, best known for his work on the Pennsylvania Impressionists. He is the author of Waylande Gregory: Art Deco Ceramics and the Atomic Impulse and has written over 20 articles on twentieth century American ceramics. Tom is currently organizing a Waylande Gregory exhibition for the new Ceramics Museum at Alfred University, opening in 2020. The exhibition will travel to the Beach Museum in Kansas.
