Garth and Mark will discuss ceramics over the last 70 years and how the market forces and the artists have propelled some ceramics to move from the craft world into the category of fine art, and how that market, both dealers and auctions, have responded. Their focus will be both on ceramic sculpture, pots/vessels, and on some of the artists that create them.

Garth Clark is the Editor-in-Chief for CFile’s publishing projects, journal, and news magazine. Irving Blum, the pioneering contemporary art dealer who launched Andy Warhol, Ken Price and Andrew Lord’s careers, calls Clark “ceramics’ great clarifier.” The Mather Award jury of the College Art Association (Clark was the 2005 award winner) wrote that his writings “have shaped thought about the field of ceramics and indeed the field itself.” He founded the Garth Clark Gallery in Los Angeles and New York with Mark Del Vecchio in 1981 and 1983, and briefly London and Kansas City. He founded the Ceramic Arts Foundation in 1979 and was its Director until 2005. He is about to complete two books, Mind Mud: The Conceptual Ceramics of Ai Weiwei and Lucio Fontana Ceramics.

Mark Del Vecchio managed a visual materials business for educators before joining the Ceramic Arts Foundation (then The Institute for Ceramic History) in 1981. He was the Organizing Director for Modernism and Ceramics, CAF's second international ceramic symposium at the Waldorf Astoria in New York. The same year, in partnership with Garth Clark, he opened Garth Clark Gallery in Los Angeles, and then GCG New York in 1983; he directed the new gallery on West 57th Street through its closing in 2008.

Cynthia D. Herbert, President and Principal Appraiser of Appretium, is a Certified Member of the Appraisers Association and is the immediate past President of the Board of Directors. Cynthia D. Herbert is qualified to appraise fine and decorative art, antiques, and general household contents/personal property. Her extensive gallery and auction experience, as well as her extended studies, define her as a skilled generalist with broad expertise. Ms. Herbert is a Board-Certified Instructor of Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice, an Adjunct Instructor at New York University's School of Professional Studies, and a current member of The Appraisal Foundation's Personal Property Issues Panel.
