Appraising unique and singular objects with few or no direct comparable properties may pose multiple assignment problems for the personal property appraiser. Standard appraisal practices and principles may not always apply when developing complex methodologies and determining credible and acceptable final value conclusions. In The Comparable Void, Todd W. Sigety will analyze some of the challenges facing the appraiser when confronted with limited to no comparable property. Discussions will include and explore options such as developing creative methodologies, using parallel equivalencies, developing value progressions, obtaining supporting context through expert opinion and rationalizing value adjustment extrapolations.

Todd W. Sigety, an independent appraiser owns and operates WSA Appraisals in Alexandria, VA. He is a past president of the International Society of Appraisers, a past Chair of the Appraisal Foundation’s Advisory Council. He developed and edited the Journal of Advanced Appraisal Studies published by the Foundation for Appraisal Education and for years published a blog on personal property and fine art news. He holds a connoisseurship certificate in the Fine and Decorative Arts from George Washington University and is tested and qualified under the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP).

Todd specializes in important fine and decorative art appraisals and has established a reputation for providing unique and complex valuation assignments by developing credible methodologies and value conclusions where there are few or no direct comparable properties. He has appraised many rare and historically important objects including the coat President Lincoln was wearing when assassinated, George Washington’s chess set, early 19th century fencing around the White House, the first purpose-built mountain bike, monumental Thomas Moran scenes of Yellowstone, Thomas Affleck Congress Hall Federal inlaid mahogany writing desk, Thomas Sully portrait of Andrew Jackson (original portrait basis for $20 bill), artifacts from the Society of the Cincinnati, and the Estate of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
