Discover the world of Drouot, a key player in the art market since 1852, through the lens of the ‘Oeuvres Choisies’ (‘Selected Works’) quarterly collegiate exhibition. The discussion will include an introduction to the Drouot Group by President Alexandre Giquello and La Gazette Drouot International Editor Nicky Griggs followed by an examination of a selection of artworks, featured in this group exhibition highlighting works coming up for sale, by experts in the respective fields. Lastly, they will discuss the differences in the auction process and rules in Europe.
About Drouot: Since 1852, the Hôtel Drouot has stood as a key player in art market. Located in the heart of Paris, it is the world's largest public auction center with more than 60 affilate auction houses operating across 15 auction rooms. Over 230,000 works ranging from classical antiquity to street art and beyond from 21 major specialties attract some 3,000 bidders every day. It was here in 1891 and 1895 that Paul Gauguin sold work to fund his trip to Tatihi.
The Hotel Drouot is a subsidiary of the Groupe Drouot, which includes La Gazette Drouot the historic weekly magazine, in French and English, covering auctions, the market, arts and culture since 1891; the Group's digital platform, Drouot.com, which offers digital sales on which nearly 2 million items are offered each year by 600 auction houses from around the globe…
Les Œuvres Choisies Exhibition: Each quarter the Hotel Drouot curates the “Les Œuvres Choisies“ or “Selected Works“collegiate exhibition that highlights the some of the most exciting works of the coming auction season at Drouot. The exhibition is a collective effort of the ‘commisaires-priseurs’ that form, in part, the Drouot Group, foregrounding the unique character, a balance independence and collaboration, of this historic institution. This bird’s eye view offers a useful means of familiarizing oneself with the range of sales in addition to the experts, specialists and auctioneers who are the beating heart of Drouot

Alexandre Giquello is an auctioneer and the Chairman of Groupe Drouot
Graduating from the Ecole du Louvre in 1998, Alexandre Giquello attended law school at the Faculté de droit d'Orléans and the Faculté de droit d'Utrecht in the Netherlands, as a law degree together with a degree is required for auctioneers in France. In 2002 Giquello qualified as an auctioneer and joined forces with Paul Renaud in 2002, crowning him the youngest auctioneer in the Compagnie de Paris at that time.
In 2009, Giquello merged his auction house with the firm of Jean-Claude Binoche forming the Binoche et Giquello auction house, which became Giquello Maison de Vente in 2018 following the departure of Jean-Claude Binoche.
2012 marked a milestone, as his auctioneer’s hammer struck down at €2,900,000 for a Maya sculpture garnering the highest bid at Drouot that year. Again in 2014, under Giquello’s hammer the iconic hat of Napoleon I fetched €1,884,000 at the sale of the Napoleonic collection from the Palais Princier de Monaco, organized in association with the Osenat auction house.
Giquello auctioned “Big John” the largest known triceratops skeleton to date, which sold for an impressive €6,651,000, in 2021. On December 6, 2022, he sold Mr. P.'s remarkable numismatics collection, which reached an unprecedented total of €4,520,196 for a sale in this specialty, and obtained several records for certain coins. Most recently, in March 2025, he led the sale of Philippe Missillier's prestigious collection of antique weapons, which totalled €7,527,000.
Alexandre Giquello’s history with the Drouot Group stretches back numerous years. Appointed Chairman in June 2017, he previously served as Vice-Chairman Directors and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Drouot Enchère|.
Married with two children, Giquello is a bibliophile, with a penchant for antique photography and the traditional arts of Africa and Oceania; he is also a connoisseur of gourmet food and a fencing enthusiast.
Nicky (Nicole) Griggs, Editor-in-chief of the La Gazette Drouot International, the English language sister publication of the historic French weekly magazine La Gazette Drouot, focusing on the art market and arts & culture since 2020, holds a PhD in art and architectural history from Columbia University. In addition to her work at La Gazette, each year she teaches a course on the art market at the American University of Paris for undergraduate students.
