Appraiser's Statement
Mr. Holdeman holds an B.A. in Art History from Bates College. He began his career in 1993 at the Robert Miller Gallery, New York, where in 1999, he became a Director. He was involved in all aspects of the gallery’s functions including exhibition programming, sales, gallery administration and artist management including The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Louise Bourgeois, The Estate of Diane Arbus, David Hockney, The Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation, Bruce Weber, the Estate of Joan Mitchell and the Pollack-Krasner Foundation. In 2001, Mr. Holdeman joined Phillips, de Pury & Luxembourg as the Head of the Department of Photographs. In 2004, Mr. Holdeman joined Christie’s as Senior Vice President and International Head of the Departments of Photographs and 20th Century Design, handling important sales such as those from the collections of Sir Elton John, Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Berge, The Richard Avedon Foundation and the Eggleston Artistic Trust, until joining the Post War and Contemporary Art Department as International Director and member of the Chairman’s Office. In 2014, Mr. Holdeman joined Sotheby’s as Vice Chairman, Americans and Worldwide head of Photographs, 20th Century Design and Prints. In 2016, Mr. Holdeman founded Hammond Advisory Group LLC, an art advisory firm. (www.hammondadvisory.com).
