Appraiser's Statement

Sara Cain is a fine art appraiser and advisor specializing in Post-War, Contemporary, and 19th and 20th Century American art. She is an Accredited Member of the Appraisers Association of America (AAA) and is a USPAP compliant appraiser. Sara is the owner and principal of Cain Fine Art, LLC, performing appraisal and advising services. She has a broad range of experience in the art world and an understanding of its markets, consulting with national and international galleries and auction houses. She received her Master of Fine Arts in 2011 from Hunter College in painting and subsequently worked for Sotheby’s New York while earning her appraiser credentials through the AAA and New York University. After returning to Houston from New York in 2013, she served in both appraising and advising roles for three years at an art management firm before founding Cain Fine Art in 2016. Sara serves as an independent fine art appraiser for galleries and other art advisory firms in the Houston area. Sara has performed appraisals for both insurance and IRS/tax purposes for multi-million-dollar collections of art, including multi-million-dollar private collections focused on contemporary, modern, and 19th century American and Western fine art. In 2023, she appraised over 300 artworks in Invesco’s Houston corporate collection and in 2020 she cataloged over 700 artworks for Houston’s historic hotel, La Colombe d’Or. Sara has performed charitable contribution appraisals for artworks gifted by private collectors to the Menil Foundation; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio; the Art Museum of Southeast Texas in Beaumont; and the Blanton Museum of Art in Austin, among others. In addition, Sara has served on the Menil Contemporaries Steering Committee since 2016 and the Advisory Board for the Blaffer Art Museum since 2020, serving as Vice Chair for the 2022-2024 term.
