Appraiser's Statement

Brian Kalkbrenner has over 20 years of experience in the field of Rare Books and Manuscripts, having worked on the staff of several dealer-members of the Antiquarian Booksellers Association of America (ABAA), most recently James Cummins Bookseller, in New York. In addition, Brian spent five years in the Fine Books and Manuscripts department at Bonhams Auctioneers in Los Angeles and New York, where he sourced, catalogued, and sold books, maps, manuscripts and related material for 7 to 10 auctions a year, as well as provided valuations for appraisals. Since 2019 he has provided Books and Manuscripts appraisals for Art Peritus in New York, and has provided independent appraisals since 2020. 

Brian has extensive experience in every category of book selling and appraising, including incunabula and early printing, literature, Americana, travel and exploration, fine press books, science and technology, modern first editions, art and artists' books, as well as literary and historical manuscripts and archives, historical photographs, maps, and printed ephemera. He has completed coursework in the California Rare Books School, and he received an MFA in Poetry from New York University.

Brian is a Certified Member of the Appraisers Association of America, and is Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) compliant through July 2, 2026.
