Appraiser's Statement

Sarah Kirk Hanley’s knowledge of Western art spans the Renaissance to the present and she has over twenty years of experience in the field. She is currently an independent critic, appraiser, and a consulting expert for Art Peritus, New York; Freemans/Hindman auctions; and Winston Art Group, New York. She is also an adjunct instructor at SUNY Purchase in the History of Printmaking; a member of the board of directors for The Atelier 17 Project, which encourages new research about this avant-garde printmaking workshop upon its 2027 centennial; and a frequent speaker with the Center for the Preservation of Artists’ Legacies (CPAL) and Sotheby's Institute of Art. From late 2019 to early 2021, Hanley served as Executive Director of Manhattan Graphics Center. Prior to that, from 2009-19, she was a consultant for Auctionata and 1stdibs, and a contributor to Art21 Magazine and Art in Print. She served as Assistant Vice President of Christie’s Print Department from 2006-09, where she was involved in coordinating sales, managing consignments, producing sales catalogues, and preparing appraisals for distinguished clients. Hanley was Associate Curator of Prints, Drawings, and Photographs at the Milwaukee Art Museum from 2000-05, where she organized and contributed to several exhibitions and publications. Hanley has also held positions at the Lower East Side Printshop and the John Michael Kohler Arts Center. She holds an MA in Museum Education from the University of the Arts, Philadelphia, and a BFA in Printmaking and Fine Art from the University of Iowa, magna cum laude. Hanley is a member of ArtTable, the Association of Print Scholars, the Catalogue Raisonné Scholars Association, and Phi Beta Kappa.
